(a) School for the Intellectually Disabled program :

SWID Bangladesh pioneered special education system in Bangladesh and still now it is the biggest organization which provides special education for the intellectually disabled in 36 district through its specials schools. Statistics of educational service is given bellow:

• Total number classes: 264
• Total number of student: 7516
• Total number of schools: 48
• Number of staff: 479

Class wise distribution of the students is as follows

(b) Awareness development and government involvement :

• Developed awareness among the common people regarding education and training of the intellectually disabled
• Drew attention of the government for development activities of the disabled people, as a result government has come forward to support educational program of the disabled by providing 80 percent salary support to the 442 teachers/staff of special education program of SWID Bangladesh.
• As a result of combined efforts of SWID Bangladesh and other organizations, government has developed National Disability Policy and Disabled Welfare Act 2001.

(c) Professional development :

• Developed a group of professionals, teachers and other staff to work for the welfare of the intellectually disabled. SWID has organized training programs to develop a group of professionals who become the key professionals and trainer for the teaching staff. Both the professionals and teaching staff has been locally as well as from abroad. It has trained staff of other organization to disseminate knowledge and skills of handling the intellectually disabled persons.

(d) Resource materials

• Curriculum for the intellectualy disabled has been developed and printed for using in the special schools run by SWID Bangladesh

• A teachers' guide for implimenting the curriculum has been developed and printed

• Training mannuals for teachers training and other staff training have been developed

(e) Cultural development of the persons with intellectual disability :

• Organized a good number of cultural programs with the participation of the intellectually disabled persons.

• Intellectually disabled persons have shown remarkable performances in the World Special Olympics
